Project on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Daily Life Actions

The project has completed a wide variety of educational and promotional activities, including developing tourism hotel industry’s voluntary carbon dioxide emission reducing program, producing greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and energy conservation evaluation and demonstration report through cooperation with National Central University, publishing seed-teacher teaching materials for use by the Citizens’ Action Plan on No Regret Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Measures, and developing climate change teaching materials. The project also organized or participated in many field activities such as showings of the movie “An Inconvenient Truth”, organized 4 Family Low-Carbon Days educational activities in 4 major cities around Taiwan, as well as participation in Taiwan Applied Materials Earth Day Activity, 2008 Taipei International Green Industry Exhibition-Energy, Environmental Protection and Water Technology Exhibition, and Information Month Exhibition. The project’s other promotional efforts included: production of the Ten Declarations for No Regret Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Measures; printing of 60,000 more copies of Tips on Carbon Reduction through Daily Lives; and conducted joint promotional activities with Environment Day, National Geographic Magazine, Knowledge Magazine, Shin Kong Life, Shinkong Life Foundation, Friends of Public TV Magazine, Citizens’ Carbon Dioxide Reduction e-Newsletter; as well as constant update of Citizens’ Carbon Dioxide Reduction website and designs of dedicated web pages. On gathering of relevant international information and development trend, the project has gathered information on education of citizens on climate change from UNFCCC’s published national communications submitted by European Union, Denmark, Finland, Germany, USA and Japan, as well as several submissions from non-Annex I counties. Project personnel also took part in Japan’s Eco-Products 2007 and Canada’s Globe 2008 conferences and exhibitions. As of the end of July 2008, 450 products from 32 partners were qualified under ENERGY STAR program in Taiwan. Also 3 products were found to be using the ENERGY STAR logo illegally through the project’s surveillance activities. In addition, 4 issues of Highlights of ENERGY STAR electronic newsletter in both Chinese and English were published, and an impact assessment was presented on the newly published imaging equipment ENERGY STAR specification to bring attention to domestic manufacturers.
